Her birthplace and childhood was at Menlo Park in the suburbs south of San Francisco. Walter Smith was an IT market researcher, while Lora Smith was employed as a therapist. Courtney Smith lived in the home of both her parents, at different time periods. Jennifer the older sister is a marketer. She studied at Menlo-Atherton High School (Atherton Calif.) as well as Tamalpais High School (Mill Valley in California), graduating in 1985. As a high school student she was also a member of the Ensemble Theater Company of Mill Valley.
